It is hard to believe that the end of November marks one month left until our regular admissions deadline for fall 2019. Whether you are considering GEMS for your child or would like a helpful resource to send to friends and family considering the program, we thought it would be helpful to share some frequently asked questions and helpful tips when it comes to the admissions process at GEMS World Academy Chicago.
When should I apply? What are the admissions timelines?
Especially for families new to independent schools, this is a very understandable question! In general, most people apply for school during the school year before they are seeking placement for their child. There are quite a few families that apply for consideration for an immediate transfer, and we do currently have availability for excellent candidates, but the majority of families apply between September through June for consideration for the following fall.
Our regular admissions deadline for submitting an application is Dec. 31, 2018. Applications received after that date will be considered on a space-available basis.
For applications submitted by Dec. 31, 2018:
Completion of application requirements: Feb. 8, 2019
(read more about the requirements by grade here)
Notification: On or before Feb. 22, 2019
Commitment: On or before March 15, 2019
For families who submit an application after our deadline, you will be notified of an admissions decision within two weeks of completion of all application requirements.
We are stressing to all families, but particularly those considering our most competitive entry points (preschool, junior kindergarten, kindergarten, grade 6 and grade 9), to apply by Dec. 31 for the best chance at admission for the upcoming year.

Is admissions competitive? What are you looking for in a student?
Our program, rooted in the International Baccalaureate (IB) within a localized context, is known around the world for its rigor and its success at placing students in top colleges and universities. Independent schools like ours are mission-driven, which means we are looking for students who not only show academic promise within the framework of our curriculum, but also demonstrate that they and their families are aligned with our values and our approach to readying students for what’s to come in college and career. We are proud to be a local community that thinks globally; as important as academic skills and knowledge is the concept of global citizenship, of being an empathetic and tolerant member of society, of being an innovator, of being someone who is always asking “why?” and “what if?” We at GEMS are committed to enrolling students we know will be successful in our program and make a lasting contribution to our globally-minded community.
What is tuition? Do you offer financial aid?
We’ve not yet set our tuition but are very close to doing so. We will be letting our current families know first and will then alert our applicants and post tuition online. To be alerted when tuition is posted, submit our inquiry form and we will add you to the list. We do offer financial aid as well as scholarships for outstanding academic promise. More information on our policies will be released around the timing of our tuition announcement.
Where do I go with questions?
Our Admissions team is happy to answer any and all questions you have, from those about our program itself to the application process. You can contact the team via email or by phone. Additionally, we have developed an FAQ document that we give out to families who attend an admissions event. You can access that here. We recently launched a bi-weekly admissions newsletter to all families that have expressed interest in 2019 admissions that contains helpful information about the admissions process. Would you like to receive it? Fill out our brief inquiry form.
